Things to know for teaching STEM

So, will you be teaching STEM? You could be a STEM teacher for the first time, or maybe you are an experienced STEM teacher ready to add fresh energy and creative flair to your classes. It’s time to roll up your sleeves in any situation and dive into studying, organizing, and preparing. Prepare to integrate the four STEM subjects.

 In standard launch sites, STEM subjects are not instructed. You’ll be combining and applying science, technology, engineering, and math into your STEM teaching. For students, this produces real-world, practical learning. A more realistic treatment of grade-level science and math material should be provided to your students than in conventional classes alone. Help students apply and become more creative in what they learn. Develop their capacity to build thinking, understanding, research, and creative skills so that in our highly technical world they can work and succeed.

Meet the standards

Take a look at both the standards of science and math that are expected to be reached this year by the students you teach. Some of these lend themselves to STEM lessons better than others, and some are more important than others for children to master. In your early development, you can use this knowledge in a few possible ways:

• Option 1: Start with your standards for content. You might start by selecting one or more content standards that children need to focus on. Then search for an engineering challenge (real-life issue) that would enable children to apply these standards.

• Option 2: Start with the challenge of engineering. Maybe you have a real-world problem in mind already. Maybe you plan to include your students in finding a real problem they want to solve. To begin with, you would have them “engaged” in that case. This engineering challenge needs to be doable and should always answer one or more science and math goals at the grade level.

Understand engineering

The heart of the STEM process is engineering, so you’ll need to be familiar with the steps of this process. In an engineering design method, math, science, and technology are combined-put together to solve problems. The EDP provides students with a way to regularly learn about problem-solving, and it also carries over into other fields. Children define problems in this process, conduct research, and develop several solution ideas. Develop and create a product or model, and then test, review, and redesign. Here’s an EDP graphic that I’m using, which is possibly not the only one out there. You’ll just search it and see other possibilities. You don’t have to obey the sequence of these moves. Engineers are moving between them back and forth.


Realize that many of your students will not be working in fields usually known as STEM disciplines while you are planning to teach STEM.
